A Back-to-School Message from Councilwoman Katrina Avers

As a new school year begins, I want to congratulate all of our students, families, and teachers. The first days of school are always filled with excitement, anticipation, and promise for what lies ahead.
This season also brings busier roads, new routines, and in some areas, changing traffic patterns due to construction. I know the combination can create challenges, but I ask each of us to slow down, stay alert, and keep safety first. Allowing a few extra minutes in the morning, being mindful in school zones, and showing courtesy to fellow drivers can make a big difference.
Construction projects, though sometimes inconvenient, represent real progress—safer streets, smoother commutes, and stronger infrastructure for our community. Let’s extend grace to our construction crews, crossing guards, bus drivers, and neighbors as we navigate these transitions together.
The back-to-school season is not only about classrooms; it’s also about strengthening our community spirit. A wave, a smile, or a bit of extra patience can go a long way. Together, we can ensure this school year begins on a safe and positive note for everyone.

2025 OKC GO Bond: What You Need to Know

This October, Oklahoma City voters will decide on a new General Obligation (GO) Bond that would fund a wide range of infrastructure improvements across the city. The bond proposal includes projects such as street and sidewalk repairs, drainage upgrades, public safety facilities, park improvements, transit enhancements, and more. Importantly, the bond is structured to move forward with no change to existing property tax rates—funded through the continuation of existing revenue.

The ballot will be organized into 11 separate propositions, allowing voters to consider each category—like streets, public safety, and parks—individually.

Key Election Dates:

• Last Day to Register to Vote: Friday, September 19, 2025

• Election Day: Tuesday, October 14, 2025

As residents, it’s our individual responsibility to stay informed, learn what’s in the bond, and show up at the polls ready to vote with confidence.

Road conditions remain one of the top concerns for SW OKC residents — and with good reason! Whether it’s fixing what’s worn down or building for future growth, street infrastructure directly affects our daily lives and neighborhood pride. Below, you’ll find an overview of current road projects in our area, along with their status and what’s coming next.

• SW 15th-Mustang to Sara - Widening- expected completion Q4 2025

• SW 15th-Czech Hall to Mustang Rd - Widening-expected completion Q4 2025

• SW 29th-Rockwell to MacArthur - Widening-expected to begin Fall 2025

• Cemetery-Reno to NW 10th - Widening-expected to begin Q1 2026

• Czech Hall-Reno to SW 15th - Widening-begins late 2025

• SW 59th-Council to Rockwell - Widening-expected to begin Q3 2026

• SW 59th-County Line to Hwy152 - Widening-expected to begin Q3 2026

• SW59th-County Line to Council - Resurfacing-expected to begin Q3 2026

If you have a road issue to report — like potholes, drainage problems, or street damage — use the OKC Action Center at okc.gov/action to submit a request. Be sure to write down your case number. If the issue hasn’t been resolved within 10 days of acknowledgment, email your case number and details to Ward3@okc.gov for follow-up.

Community Buzz: Coffee with a Cop Recap

Thanks to everyone—residents, officers, and Summer Moon Coffee at 3200 S. Mustang Rd.—for joining us for a morning of connection and coffee! As SWOKC keeps growing, public safety remains a key priority.

Here are two great ways to stay engaged and help make our neighborhoods safer:

1. Connect with Law Enforcement – Events like Coffee with a Cop build rapport, foster trust, and strengthen community bonds with OKCPD.

2. Get Involved Locally – Neighbors Night Out is coming up Tuesday, September 9th. It’s the perfect opportunity to unite neighbors for block parties, porch gatherings, or community chats. You can even request an OKCPD officer to join your event—sign up through nacok.org.

Together, we’re building a safer, more connected SWOKC. Let’s keep the conversation—and the community spirit—going!

Hot Topic: Growth and Development

Continued growth in Southwest OKC means more pressure on infrastructure—and that’s exactly why the 2025 GO Bond matters. It’s our opportunity to make sure our part of the city gets the investment it needs to keep up with the growth we’re experiencing.

Here’s a list of development you need to know about:

PUD-2087 - 9700 SW 44th St - Yukotang District - The applicant is seeking to rezone from AA (Agriculture) to O-1 (office related uses) and C-3 (regional commercial) to provide a mixed use development consisting of multi-family, office and commercial uses.

PUD-2090 - 200 S Richland Rd - Frisco District - The applicant is seeking to provide single-family lots (zoned R-A) with a minimum lot size of 0.75 acres. If public utilities become available, the PUD will allow R-1 zoning, which could change the lot size. It is currently zoned for AA (agriculture).

PUD-2092 - 800 S Sara Rd - Yukotang District - The applicant is seeking to rezone from O-1 (office related uses), O-2 (office related uses), I-1 (light industrial), and I-2 (heavy industrial) to entirely I-2 (heavy industrial).

PUD-2096 - 1100 S Council Rd - Elevare District- The applicant is seeking to rezone from I-1 (light industrial and R-1 single family homes) to entirely I-1 (light industrial).

SPUD-1755 - 1321 N Meridian Ave - WesTen District - The applicant is looking to develop in accordance with O-1 (office related uses) and NB (neighborhood business)

SPUD-1756 - 8139 NW 10th St - WesTen District - The applicant seeks to rezone from C-3 (Intensive commercial) and R-1 (single family homes) to entirely C-3 (intensive commercial).

SPUD-1775 - 1900 S Portland Ave - Elevare District - The applicant is looking to develop in accordance with the current I-2 (heavy industrial) zoning.

SPUD-1776 - 512 S Mustang Rd - Yukotang District - The applicant is looking to develop in accordance with the current C-3 (intensive commercial) zoning

Community Cleanup: Free Landfill Day

Mark your calendar — Saturday, September 13, 2025, is Oklahoma City’s next Free Landfill Day for residential trash customers. It’s a great opportunity to clear out bulky waste or help clean up neighborhood common areas and green spaces without the added cost. Just bring proof of your OKC trash service (like your utility bill or the My OKC Utilities app) and head to a participating landfill. For full details and locations, visit okc.gov.
